SUBJECT: New Years Forum--1942 Battle of L.A., San Diego UFO Sightings (present and past) , Institutionalized Myths and Cults, Video for Analysis, Q and A Session

Abstract:
This forum will be an interactive series of lectures on subjects worthy of detailed information and knowledge for consideration by those interested in the UFO phenomenon. Our first lecture will focus on the Feb 25, 1942 "Battle of L.A." This event has been recalled numerous times on TV, in books and the media as well as the internet. Mel Podell will present the latest update on this mysterious and puzzling incident. The topic of Institutionalized Myths and Cults will be discussed by Ed McBride. He will explain how ancient history is distorted in such a way that ancient myths and cults are superimposed on factual events. Rich Stockfelt will continue relating his findings on some present day San Diego sightings. San Diego County has been the location of numerous UFO sightings over past decades. Some important cases will be enumerated and a few cases discussed in depth.by San Diego County Sec Dir Mel Podell. Finally a video taken from the internet will be shown so that all attendees will have a chance to discuss their analysis and conclusions about the content of this video. Q and A will conclude the Forum.

New Years UFO Hoaxes on Schedule--Newspapers, TV, and the internet received reports of the usual influx of hoax UFO sightings in the form of lights and flares. The Union Tribune had an article on "flickering lights to the east" inside its main section. MUFON San Diego Field Investigator Rich Stockfelt gave an interview to Fox 5, 69 TV which was shown on the 10 PM news. The article on these lights was in the Short Takes news in brief of countywide interest under Our Region for Saturday Jan 2, 2010. Another follow-up article was published in the Jan 6, 2010 issue of the UT. Michael Stetz headlined an article titled "UFO Prank Didn't Start a Fire But What If?" Similar hoaxes and pranks began more than 15 years ago in North San Diego County. In more recent years these have spread to the East County areas. When these hoaxes first appeared in the North County, MUFON San Diego Field Investigator Gary Davidson tracked down a number of them to their launch site at a parking lot in an apartment complex in Vista. MUFON San Diego recognized the potential fire dangers of these candle-lit balloons and flares attached to balloons. UFO believers and debunkers should not crack jokes or take this subject lightly as it has serious implications for potential wild fires in our dry areas. Law enforcement and fire officials need to act immediately to put a stop to such foolishness. Also the media need to cease publicity which only excites these hoaxers to become repeat offenders.
Coast to Coast AM--MUFON received considerable publicity on a recent Sunday program hosted by George Knapp. Alejandro Rojas and Antonio Huneeus were interviewed as well as Mark Eastman who is MUFON's new Dir of Public Relations.
Union Tribune, Saturday, Dec.5, 2009--An article appeared entitled "ET is Calling but London won't Pickup". This article told about Britain's Ministry of Defense closing its UFO hotline and no longer investigating any UFO sightings.
